This report presents the key findings on forest land use and land-use change between 1990 and 2005 from FAO’s 2010 Global Forest Resources Assessment Remote Sensing Survey. It is the first report of its kind to present systematic estimates of global forest land use and change. The ambitious goal of the Remote Sensing Survey was to use remote sensing data to obtain globally consistent estimates of forest area and changes in tree cover and forest land use between 1990 and 2005.

This tenth edition of State of the World's Forests elaborates on a fundamental truth: forests, forestry and forest products play a critical role in sustainable development. State of the World's Forests is published every two years. Throughout history, deforestation has accompanied economic development. It was primarily in response to deforestation that the concept of sustainable development originated and evolved within forest science.

The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources addresses the conservation, management and sustainable use of forest tree and other woody plant genetic resources of actual and potential value for human well-being in the broad range of management systems. This report complements two other FAO flagship publications in the field of forestry, the annual State of the World’s Forests and the periodic Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA).

Forecasts for the forest resource and roundwood supply are one of the two fundamental parts of ETTS V (the other is consumption and production projections). National ETTS V correspondents were asked to provide detailed forecasts for the area, growing stock, increment, fellings and removals of their countries at 10 year intervals from 1990 to 2040. These replies were then checked and analysed, and are presented in this Working Paper, in full detail.

Genetic diversity is the basis of the ability of organisms to adapt to changes in their environment through natural selection. Populations with little genetic variation are more vulnerable to the arrival of new pests or diseases, pollution, changes in climate and habitat destruction due to human activities or other catastrophic events. The inability to adapt to changing conditions greatly increases the risk of extinction. Gene conservation management aimed to save adaptive genetic diversity should be based on the knowledge of the genetic basis of adaptation.
