    This manual provides methods for the development and evaluation of criteria and indicators (C&I) which can then be used to assess the sustainability of forest management. The manual is written primarily for researchers, people or groups interested in evaluating C&I for assessments of forests in new areas, or as a reference for readers wanting to know how CIFOR's Generic Template was produced. The methods presented are aimed at the development of sets of C&I for natural forest at the forest management unit level, especially in the tropics.

    This document provides an overview of the status of forest resources in Asia and the Pacific and their sustainable management through national forest programmes in 30 countries in the region, including new country profiles for Brunei Darussalam, Maldives and the United States of America. The update is based on information derived from a variety of sources, including country reports to the eighteenth Asia Pacific Forestry Commission meeting in Australia in May 2000. Major changes have emerged in forests and forestry policies in recent years.

    The Global Forest Resources Assessment 2000 (FRA 2000) provides a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the world's forest resources at the end of the second millennium. It is the result of the collective efforts of the countries of the world. This major undertaking was based primarily on information provided by the countries, supplemented by state-of-the-art technology to verify and analyse the information and to make the results accessible to the world through the Internet. The FRA 2000 process emphasized collaboration and transparency.

    Water, an essential component of life supporting systems, is at the forefront of discussions on global sustainability and food security. Water also has a major role in poverty alleviation and local food security. The technology for a more effective use of the resource is known but institutional reforms needed to lead the world in a positive direction are proving difficult to establish. This study was commissioned to suscitate constructive discussion around many sensitive aspects of water policy.
