In December 1997, FAO hosted a workshop, Pluralism and Sustainable Forestry and Rural Development. to exchange information and experiences and to explore mechanisms, methods and fore for optimizing cooperation among the different groups concerned with the management of forest resources. The workshop was attended by 35 participants representing different organizations (and organizational types, geographic regions and disciplines). The articles in this issue of Unasylva are adaptations of papers presented at that workshop.
This paper presents an overview of the various approaches that developed and developing countries have used in designing national forest funds. It is based on a study of legislation in over forty countries and a review of some of the few empirical studies of forest fund performance. The overview may serve as checklist of issues and options for policymakers who are designing funds. It also may illuminate ongoing discussions about appropriate international roles in forest financing. The paper presents some of the common arguments for and against the use of dedicated funds.
There is a urgent need for a better understanding of the risks of soil degradation and their geographical distribution as well as a better knowledge of where degradation occurs at present. it would be desirable to combine soil conservation activities with other elements for increasing crop production.Erosion, salinity and alkalinity and the loss of soil fertility seriously reduce the natural potential of soils to produce food fibres. During the meeting, many criteria to assess the various types of soil degradation were outlined by the experts.
Este informe presenta los principales resultados sobre el uso de las tierras forestales y el cambio de uso de la tierra entre 1990 y 2005 de la Encuesta por teledetección de la Evaluación de los Recursos Forestales Mundiales 2010 de la FAO. Este es el primer informe de su género en presentar estimaciones sistemáticas sobre el uso y cambio de las tierras forestales mundiales.
Todo estudio de caracterización de causas y agentes de deforestación debe basarse en un marco conceptual sólido que tenga en cuenta los elementos más importantes para comprender y analizar el fenómeno, al tiempo que se adapte a las características del territorio estudiado. Contar con una base nacional de información de causas y agentes de deforestación, implica que los estudios se sustenten en una base conceptual común, que permita la estandarización y uso de la información recopilada a nivel local, regional o nacional, en el diseño de medidas y acciones de mitigación.
En el Proyecto TCP/RLA/3404 “Casos de ejemplaridad de manejo forestal sostenible en América Latina y el Caribe: fortalecimiento de políticas y programas nacionales”, ejecutado en Costa Rica, Chile, Guatemala y Uruguay, se evaluaron y seleccionaron 31 experiencias de buenas prácticas forestales y las lecciones aprendidas.
