In light of these global targets and emerging ambitious national commitments, it is imperative to develop low-cost strategies and techniques for landscape restoration. The most widely used restoration strategies involving planting of tree seedlings are often costly and their application for restoring vast expanses of degraded forest lands in the region may be limited.

The Director General may, with the sanction of the Central Government, purchase, take lease or assume the guardianship of any protected monument, for its protection or preservation.

These Rules provide for the institution and responsibilities of the related Authority in relation to: the registration of wells and the licence to drill wells; the construction of rain water harvesting structures; the registration of rigs; the prohibition of water contamination, for both surface and groundwater; land use and water quality; the forestation of urban areas, etc. The Authority may take over wells in order to ensure supply of drinking water to local population. Violations of the provisions of these Rules shall be punishable with fines specified in section 26.

There is a urgent need for a better understanding of the risks of soil degradation and their geographical distribution as well as a better knowledge of where degradation occurs at present. it would be desirable to combine soil conservation activities with other elements for increasing crop production.Erosion, salinity and alkalinity and the loss of soil fertility seriously reduce the natural potential of soils to produce food fibres. During the meeting, many criteria to assess the various types of soil degradation were outlined by the experts.
