This article looks at the changes which are taking place in the Syrian semi-nomadic bedouin flocks' feeding and migration patterns, and the historical reasons for these changes. Most of the discussion will focus on three steppe-based villages in northern Syria, where the International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) undertook a three-year survey between 1978 and 1981, and where a follow-up study was done this year.

Paper states that there are two apparent contradictions in the title of this paper. Extensive grazing is the predominant form of land use on at least a quarter of the world’s land surface, in which livestock are raised on food that comes mainly from rangelands. Extensive grazing differs from crop or forestry production, in which the produce remains in situ whilst growing. Evaluation for extensive grazing, unlike that for cropping or forestry, must take into account the production of both grazing forage, termed primary production, and the livestock that feed on this forage, termed secondary production.

This report summarizes the results obtained during 1998/99 season related to the socioeconomic research component of Integrated Watershed Development Project in Mihassa. The Project aims at developing sustainable practices of water harvesting and water spreading techniques, under very arid conditions, to produce sustainable increases in the amount of forages, and to improve grazing and range lands available for sheep and goats. In 1989, the Syrian Government established, as a part of this project, Mihassa Research Station, which is located at about 130 km to the northeast of Damascus City.

The present Law also amends new articles of the Village Law of 1924, the Law on Natural Disasters 1959, and the Tourism Incentives Act of 1982. The formation of the technical teams is re-defined. The in-forest pastures and grazelands are re-defined by a committee set up by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and cannot be used for any other purposes unless their allocation purposes are modified.

This Law amends the Law No. 5403 on Soil Preservation and Land Utilization and the Law No. 4342 on pastures.This Law adds two new clauses (f) and (g) to Article. 13 of the Law No. 5403 on the use of agricultural lands other than agricultural purposes. The new clauses set forth agticultural lands may be used for renewable energy production purposes and geothermal greenhouse investments. The Law also repeals Provisional Article. 3 and adds a new provisional article to the above mentioned Law No. 5403. This Law further makes amendments in the Law No. 4342 by adding two new clauses to Article.
