A historical analysis of the current land invasion crisis, examining the chequered past of the white farmers. Contrasts the present situation with the eviction without compensation by whites of Chief Tangwenya and his followers. Examines the different interpretations by the British and Zimbabwean Governments of the agreement over land reached at Lancaster House in 1979. Argues that the present media coverage lacks historical perspective and is doing the country a disservice. There are more questions needing to be asked about Britain’s role

Longitudinal household data can have considerable advantages over much more widely used cross-sectional data. The collection of longitudinal data, however, may be difficult and expensive. One problem that has concerned many analysts is that sample attrition may make the interpretation of estimates problematic. Such attrition may be particularly severe in areas where there is considerable mobility because of migration between rural and urban areas.

Because of increasing water scarcity in developing countries, poor people are suffering greatly from ?water deprivation.? One approach to improving water resources management is to develop river basin management institutions. This paper contrasts government-dominated approaches to forming such institutions with attempts to create stakeholder-based institutions. Two cases of the latter, in Mexico and South Africa, are compared to extract lessons for other countries.

This report presents an analysis of the structural determinants of living standards and poverty in Mozambique, which is based on nationally-representative data from the first national household living standards survey since the end of the civil war: Poverty in Mozambique is predominantly a rural phenomenon and is pervasive, with over two-thirds of the population falling below the poverty line. Characterizing soil erosion hazard and its spatial variability is critical for maintaining
user confidence in planning soil- and water- conservation programmes and general
land-use management. Predicting the average rates of soil erosion for a combination
of specific soil and land-use types is vital. This is because such predictions form a
basis for providing guidelines for effective erosion control.
The purpose of this investigation was to examine the erosion effects of alternative

    Rwanda

Rwanda is currently in transition from a period of emergency to one of development following the 1994 war and genocide. Before the tragic events of 1994, the Agricultural Statistics Division (DSA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Resources and Forestry (MINAGRI) maintained a comprehensive database of agricultural statistics. The DSA was responsible for providing information on agricultural policy based on annual surveys of rural households. These surveys, which were interrupted in 1994 were resumed in 1999 by the Food Security Research Project (FSRP) and the DSA of MINAGRI.

Historically, land improvement schemes were based on encouraging, through financial incentives, land users to adopt specific soil management and conservation measures. Insufficient attention was paid to the constraints faced by farmers or to the policy, biophysical and socio-economic environment. In many cases such approaches have failed in restoring the natural resources and in increasing productivity in sustainable manner. For too long farmers have been the passive recipients of externally derived research and extension recommendations for soil management and conservation.
