Land is a critical resource. It is finite and irreplaceable. The role and efficiency of land use planning is therefore of considerable national importance. The issues faced by Rwanda in relation to land and land use planning are well recorded.
This report presents the dissemination and communication activities for the period February – September 2015 of the 2 year IDRC funded action research project entitled “Improving Access to Justice and Basic Services in the Informal Settlements of Nairobi”.
The urban population in Ethiopia is increasing rapidly. If managed proactively, urban population growth presents a huge opportunity to shift the structure and location of economic activity from rural agriculture to the larger and more diversified urban industrial and service sectors. If not managed proactively, rapid urban population growth may pose a demographic challenge as cities struggle to provide jobs, infrastructure and services, and housing.
About two-thirds of the developing world’s 3 billion rural people live in about 475 million small farm households, working on land plots smaller than 2 hectares. 1 Many are poor and food insecure and have limited access to markets and services. Their choices are constrained, but they farm their land and produce food for a substantial proportion of the world’s population. Besides farming they have multiple economic activities, often in the informal economy, to contribute towards their small incomes.
Looks at land use planning challenges in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) of Kenya – lack of coherent vision, disconnect between political and technical planning processes, urgent needs of ASALs not being considered, lack of investment, National Land Commission under-resourced, conflicts over land use, lack of tenure security. Need to enact the Community Land Bill and for refocussing as a bottom up and participatory approach.
