The Danish national reports on land-use change and forestry has so far only considered C sequestration in existing forests and in afforestation areas on former arable land. The standing stock of wood in existing forests was 55.2 millions cubic m in 1990, and the annual net increment for 1990-1999 (wood increment minus harvested wood) was around 600,000 cubic m equivalent to 916 Gg CO2 per year. It is the strategy of the Danish Government to double the forested area over the next 80-100 years by encouraging afforestation of arable land.

The national reporting for the EU Monitoring Mechanism on greenhouse gas emissions and for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change includes data for greenhouse gas emissions/removals from land-use change and forestry. By comparing the reports of EU15 Member States, we identified a lack of transparency, consistency and completeness concerning chapter 5 on land-use change and forestry. For chapter 5A (Changes in forest and other woody biomass stocks) we discuss the differing ways of estimation in detail.

Ministry of the Environment is coordinating matters related to the unitéd Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change. National reporting of greenhouse gas inventories for land-use change and forestry category utilises forest inventory results with appropriate studies on biomass allocation and wood properties as well as national wood consumption statistics allowing to use country-specific values instead of overall default values provided in the Intergovernemental Panel on Climatic Change guidelines.

Since 1995, experiences have been gathered with the calculation of National Greenhouse Gas Inventories in Germany. Because only marginal changes of the total forested area occur in Germany, relevant changes of the balance of greenhouse gases in the forest sector are related to forest management. It was found that the increment of wood by far exceeds the harvested timber volume. Therefore, forests in Germany currently represent a significant sink for carbon (8-9 Mt C per year).

Suburban agriculture in Setif (Algeria): which future in face of urban growth? The suburban agriculture in Setif which is mainly based on the specialized agricultural activities (cereals, animal production) has an important role. Its economic and social values are regarded in terms of the hugeness of its areas, the number of its manpower and the quality of its production. It covers 75% of the municipality surface and production systems are generally organized according to the climatic conditions.

Forest science in support to international negotiation on climate change and its local consequences. This article gives an analysis of the major scientific questions underlying the decision making process dealing with forest monitoring under the topic land use, land use change and forestry as a driving force for climate change. It first gives the major scientific findings used as guidelines for political decisions since 1988.

Ireland has a rapidly expanding forest estate which covers some 9/ of the land area. It is government policy to increase this to 17/ by the year 2030. Preliminary studies suggest that forestry activities have the potential to contribute significantly to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. Although some studies have been carried out the determination of the carbon stores and sinks in Irish forests will require a considerable research effort in the future.

Forests and forestry play important roles in Austria with its close to 50/ forest cover. This paper provides details about the Austrian forest carbon inventory, discusses briefly the sources and sinks accounted under the land use, land use change and forestry articles of the Kyoto Protocol, and presents an integrated carbon model (Austrian C-Balance Model) that was developed to include not only the forest sector, but other sectors that are greenhouse-gas relevant.

In the COST E21-Action ""Contribution of Forests and Forestry to Mitigate Greenhouse Effects"", emphasis is put on the quantification of carbon storage in the forest ecosystems and on the understanding of linkages between human activities and climate change, particularly the role of forests and forestry.
