    Over the past decades, progress towards Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) in Africa has been made at national and subregionallevels. At national level, 43 African countries have developed specific forest law and 40 have a national forest policy. At subregionallevel, efforts to harmonize policies and programmeshave resulted in the development of the Convergence Plan of the Central African Forests Commission and the Convergence Plan for the Sustainable Management and Use of Forest Ecosystems in West Africa.

    Evaluation of FAO’s Contribution to Cambodia Although Cambodia is rapidly transitioning to a more industrialised economy, the country is still among the poorest in Southeast Asia, and the risk of sliding back into poverty remains high, especially for rural households. The goal of FAO’s programme in Cambodia has been to contribute to the eradication of poverty, food insecurity and malnutrition while promoting sustainable natural resource management. The 2018 country programme evaluation highlighted FAO’s comparative advantage – as a trusted purveyor of data and technical advice.

Since its creation in 1945, FAO has recognized the significant contributions these make to food and agriculture, and the relevance of on-farm/in situ and ex situ conservation of genetic resources for food and agriculture.

    Uganda has been monitoring its forest resources through mapping and forest inventories since the 1990s. However, the approach and frequency of data generation needs to be improved if the country is to construct a reference level compliant with the principles of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Efforts were also needed to assess forest cover change in the country.

The project was designed to develop the necessary strategies, plans, tools and mechanisms that will aid stakeholders in sustainably managing forest and land resources.

FAO’s agriculture, fisheries, forestry and technical assistance programmes provide considerable resources to assist member countries promote conservation, sustainable use and management of natural resources and to reduce the risks associated with climate extremes as well as resilience building.
