    New infographic by FAO and PIM on the correct use of land ownership statistics


    “Making sense of Land, Statistics and Gender”, a new infographic by the Gender and Land Rights database (GLRD) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM) explores the correct use of land ownership statistics (ownership understood in a broad sense beyond individual property rights) and highlights how gender can influence land rights.

    In the Sahel, around 65 percent of the active population works in the agriculture sector and their livelihoods are therefore affected by climate change, markets and environmental factors. More than half of these are women. Recurring crises pose real concerns for the achievement of sustainable food and nutrition security in the region. The root causes of vulnerability to food insecurity and malnutrition are complex and multidimensional.

    This publication summarized the activities of the project (Coping with water scarcity – the role of agriculture- Phase III: Strengthening national capacities in Lebanon). The project has helped improve the national, regional and local capacity to cope with water scarcity, as a result of an improved knowledge on how water is being used in the agricultural sector. The ultimate beneficiaries of the project were the communities of the Bekaa area, who benefited from development programme, the pilot project and interventions utilizing water for agriculture and more efficiently.

    Overall it was found that institutional capacity for strengthening forest tenure for forest dependent communities exists, but significant gaps were identified in all countries and all types of organizations. All three countries need to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the different actors to identify measures and activities that will have direct livelihood improvement benefits and increase the income of forest dependent communities.

    Small forest and farm producers manage a third of the world’s forests. Together, these smallholder families, indigenous people and local communities are the world’s largest investors in forests. They are key to sustainable forest and farm management and have a critical role to play in the success of global concerns such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), climate change adaptation and green growth. Yet all too often their voices go unheard.

    The Social Cash Transfer Pilot Programme (SCTPP) in Ethiopia is the Tigray Regional government’s pilot of a social cash transfer currently managed at the national level. The primary objective of the programme is to improve the quality of lives of orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC), the elderly and persons with disabilities as well as to enhance their access to essential social welfare services such as health care.
