Improving On-farm Agricultural Water Productivity in the Karkheh River Basin
(KRB) was a CPWF project that aimed at enhancement of agricultural water
productivity (WP) under irrigated and rainfed conditions in Karkheh River Basin. It
was launched in Iran through the partnership of ICARDA and the Iranian NARES
under the Agricultural Extension, Education, and Research Organization.

The basin has seen remarkable ancient feats of engineering, and has a long history of wheat and barley production, complemented by horticulture. With the growth of the modern nation-state of Iran, water development has progressed steadily in tandem with rising populations and urbanization.

The MISP II aims at initiating a process of sustainable income generation for vulnerable households in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah Governorates of KRG through increased employment and self-employment of household members (beneficiaries). The vehicle for this desired development is technical and business management training of selected beneficiaries undertaken by a number of project trained trainers (TOTs) and a toolkit programme supporting the trainees (TOBs) in performing their acquired skills as employed or self-employed.

This report presents the results of the most recent survey carried out in the 18 countries of the Middle East region, and it analyses the changes that have occurred in the ten years since the first survey.
