Sustainable rural development (with the development of social functions) is currently one of the basic objectives of the rural areas policy in Poland. The main purpose of this article is to determine the level of social development of rural areas and to examine whether the National Support Center for Agriculture (NSCA) activities (in the form of transferring land to communes for the implementation of social goals) have an impact on that development, and to what extent. In this article, an assessment of the social development level of rural areas using the Hellwig method was carried out.

This paper shows how the slow process of forestland restitution, which is unfolding in Romania since 1991 has eroded the threads of sustainable forest management by an insidious institutional amnesia (IA). The four symptoms of this harmful process (frequent reorganization, transition from paperwork to electronic media, fewer people motivated to join public services, and popularity of radical changes) were analyzed from the legal standing point as well as from practitioners’ perspective.

The methodological approach was focused on assessment of all the principal types of ES—regulation and maintenance, provisioning, and cultural.

Since the 1990s, many peatlands that were drained for peat extraction and agriculture in Russia have been abandoned with high CO2 emissions and frequent fires, such as the enormous fires around Moscow in 2010. The fire hazard in these peatlands can be reduced through peatland rewetting and wetland restoration, so monitoring peatland status is essential. However, large expanses, poor accessibility, and fast plant succession pose as challenges for monitoring these areas without satellite images.

The effects of subsidies on the development of organic farming (OF) in the Czech Republic and in some selected EU countries are analysed in this article. The level of subsidies for OF in the Czech Republic is continuously increasing. In 1998, the total amount of subsidies was 48 million CZK, whereas in 2004, it increased to nearly 277 million CZK. The increase of subsidies led to an increase in the number of organic farms as well as the area under OF.

The farming system at landscapes preserving and restoring soil fertility of agricultural lands have been developed. Typification of lands was made and the types of agricultural landscapes were allocated: plain, hollow-gully, and gully-field. The analysis of the current structure of arable areas was made and resulted in the assessment of structure's influence on the state of soil fertility. The main degradation processes reducing the fertility of south chernozems were studied. There were proposed the ways of creating the sustainable artificial agricultural landscapes.
