    This will ensure more sustainable ecosystems and improved rural livelihoods. Emphasis is given to building on local knowledge by using existing data, social capital, research linkages, partnerships and proven methodologies and technologies in the region thereby ensuring the sustainability of the impacts achieved. The Initiative also draws from a wide pool of multi-disciplinary expertise from within and outside the region and targets the three major agro-ecosystems in the region – rainfed, irrigated and rangeland.

    Non-tropical dry areas cover over 40% of the world’s land surface with a growing population of more than 2.5 billion people. These people grow 44% of the world’s food and keep half of the world’s livestock, yet one in six live in chronic poverty. Dry areas also face major challenges, including insufficient rainfall, climate variability and change, land degradation, desertification, recurring droughts, temperature extremes, high population growth, widespread poverty, and unemployment.

    The year 2013 witnessed progress both in research and overall operations of the Initiative. Two bilaterally funded programs for Iraq and Tunisia were launched offering new opportunities and models for engagement of US and regional research capacities. The research agenda was strengthened with increased collaboration and partnership. During 2013 the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) increased its engagement in the WLI taking a prominent role in the WLI Tunisian Program.

    The main aim of the article is to understand the trend in production and consumption of vegetables in Yemen within the period 1995-2009, and to understand the distribution of the production in the country by governorate. The production of vegetables is concentrated in six governorates (Hodeidah, Sana'a, Dhamar, Ibb, Taiz and Marib) where it represents 73.09 percent of the total production. A significant positive trend in the vegetable production was recorded in the period studied.

    The FAO Country Representation in Yemen opened in 1990. Since then, FAO has provided support to farmers, herders, and<p></p>fishers and supported the improvement of agricultural production and productivity in the country. FAO is also working with<p></p>the Yemeni authorities in an effort to reach the goals set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

    Fragility has become the reality in several countries of the Middle East and North Africa. Armed conflict and forced displacement are taking an enormous toll on human lives, with the region accounting for about 60 percent of the estimated global total of battle-related casualties since the turn of the millennium. Conflicts and fragility have also had negative economic impacts, with countries directly affected by conflict such as Syria and Yemen losing as much as half of their pre-war GDP.
