Image segmentation is a basic and important procedure in object-based classification of remote-sensing data. This study presents an approach to multi-scale optimal segmentation (OS), given that single-scale segmentation may not be the most suitable approach to map a variety of land-cover types characterized by various spatial structures; it objectively measures the appropriate segmentation scale for each object at various scales and projects them onto a single layer. A 1.8 m spatial resolution Worldview-2 image was used to perform successive multi-scale segmentations.

A new locally-adaptive image classification method LAGMA (Locally-Adaptive Global Mapping Algorithm) has been developed to meet requirements of land cover mapping over large areas using remote-sensing data. The LAGMA involves the grid-based supervised image classification using classes’ features estimated locally in classified pixels’ surrounding from spatially distributed reference data.

Potential data sets for landcover classification, such as Landsat (or pre-processed data such as the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD)), are often too coarse for fine-scale research needs or are cost-prohibitive (Quickbird, Ikonos and Geoeye). Repeated attempts at classifying high spatial resolution data, National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery, based on traditional techniques, such as a maximum likelihood supervised classification, have failed to produce a product with sufficient accuracy.

The Shangri-La County of the Yunnan Province, SW China, is an economically and ecologically important area. This is especially true for Jiantang that is famous for the Napahai, Bitahai and Shudu Lake wetlands. However, continuing development has threatened the wetland ecosystems and the associated biodiversity in these areas. To better document such changes in land use and their effect on the ecosystem, land use was mapped using a time series of satellite images acquired in 1974, 1993, 2000 and 2012. The results of this survey suggest that forest cover first decreased and then increased.

Semi-natural dry grasslands are habitats of high conservation concern. These ecosystems have not been extensively explored in the Tyrrhenian sector of the Italian peninsula, particularly in the Submediterranean climatic region. In order to address this issue and to define the synecology, syndynamics and syntaxonomy of calcareous grasslands in this area, we considered 127 phytosociological relevés. Our sampling was performed in the Lazio region according to a stratified sampling scheme based on homogeneous land units, defined by means of an ecological land classification process.

This article examines the origins of the natural-wine movement in Germany—the first of its kind in Europe—by exploring the crucial technological and social developments which prompted the use of derided “artificial” winemaking techniques. The forgotten social reformer Ludwig Gall, once known to as the “savoir of the small vintner,” helped to relieve the unreliable dependency of winegrowers on nature by perfecting a deacidification technique which allowed for pleasant wines in any vintage.

Natural vegetation and crop-greening patterns in semi-arid savannas are commonly monitored using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values from low spatial resolution sensors such as the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) (1 km, 4 km) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) (250 m, 500 m). However, because semi-arid savannas characteristically have scattered tree cover, the NDVI values at low spatial resolution suffer from the effect of aggregation of near-infrared and red energy from adjacent vegetated and non-vegetated cover types.

Wars, drought and social collapse have greatly impaired land management and agriculture production systems in the southeastern Afghanistan provinces of Khost, Paktika and Paktya. This region has long existed with limited central government influence and remains particularly unstable. A complex physical and social geography, on-going warfare, severely limited mobility and policies poorly adapted to regional realities hamper development and reconstruction.

The Loess Plateau suffers the most serious soil erosion in China. Sloping cultivated land is one of the most common land types in the region, and it leads to severe soil erosion. Analyses based on fine resolution satellite imagery can play a key role in the surveying of sloping farmland. In this article, a combination of remote-sensing (RS) and geographical information system (GIS) techniques under the hierarchical classification framework is used to investigate the sloping cultivated land in the Xi–He ecological engineering demonstration region of the Loess Plateau.

We describe a bio-economic model for Nassella neesiana (Chilean needle grass) that estimates the net benefit of a containment programme for the weed in Canterbury as the difference between the cost of containment and the costs incurred over time should the weed spread within sheep and beef pastoral systems. Logistic spread is assumed with the maximum area that could be invaded (772,080 ha) determined by constraining a climate niche model for the weed to susceptible farm system types within productive land use capability classes.
