Mauritius joined FAO in 1968. The aim of such<p></p>institutional changes is to improve the agriculture industry’s regulatory environment so that oversight functions are streamlined<p></p>and new technical realities reflected.

Dominica, Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines joined FAO in 1981. Early assistance was delivered through a range of interventions focusing on capacity building, policy formulation, agricultural planning and legislation development. More recently, interventions have addressed food security programmes, technology transfer for improved production and strengthening of market infrastructure. A major feature of current cooperation is resilience building in the face of climate change.

Morocco, Eswatini, Zimbabwe
Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) and FAO have partnered since the country joined the Organization in 1971. FAO assistance has covered the<p></p>formulation and implementation of food security and nutrition policies, including risk reduction and management strategies,<p></p>and activities to increase agricultural productivity. More recently, cooperation has included a focus on market access and<p></p>agricultural competiveness, with support to smallholders’ transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture.

Belarus and FAO have been implementing a number of development programmes to encourage agro-industry growth, rural development and trade facilitation since 2005, when the country became a member of FAO. In providing assistance, FAO is and will be focusing on increasing efforts to prevent the African Swine Fever, to help eliminate obsolete pesticides, to harmonize the standards of quality for agricultural products with the European standards, to develop climate change projects and to provide training to the Belarusian agricultural specialists.

Afghanistan joined FAO in 1949 and has a long history of technical cooperation with the Organization. Today the<p></p>Afghanistan country programme is one of FAO’s largest in the Asia and Pacific region. Ongoing projects in the country cover<p></p>household food and livelihood security, animal health and transboundary diseases; small-scale integrated dairy schemes,<p></p>value chain development; soil mapping and national agriculture ecological zoning; and development of research policy and<p></p>strategy.

The Bahamas became an FAO member state in 1975. Cooperation has focused on strategic development and increased competitiveness of the country’s agriculture and fisheries sector, with FAO interventions comprising policy and legislative support, technical development projects and rehabilitation and emergency assistance. As a flat and small island developing state (SIDS), the Bahamas is very vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, which makes resilience building an important element of cooperation today.

The partnership between Indonesia and FAO began with the country’s membership of the Organization in 1948 and<p></p>was strengthened with the opening of a country office in 1978. Over nearly 70 years, hundreds of FAO development and<p></p>emergency programmes have successfully supported the country’s food and agriculture sector, including fisheries and<p></p>forestry.
