Groundwater management practices need to take hydrogeology, the agro-climate and demand for groundwater into account. Since agroclimatic zones have already been demarcated by the Government of India, it would aid policy makers to understand the status of groundwater recharge and discharge in each agroclimatic zone. However, developing effective policies to manage groundwater at agroclimatic zone and state levels is constrained due to a paucity of temporal data and information.

This book is a challenge to those who see the drylands as naturally vulnerable to food insecurity and poverty.

It argues that improving agricultural productivity in dryland environments is possible by working with climatic uncertainty rather than seeking to control it – a view that runs contrary to decade of development practice in arid and semi-arid lands.

Across China, Kenya and India – and most other dryland countries – family farmers and herders relate to the inherent variability of the drylands as a resource to be valued, rather than a problem to be avoided.

The study area Rangapur watershed covers an area of about 2079 ha, is one of the drought prone areas in the middle Krishna Basin in Raichur district of Karnataka. An attempt is made to suggest location priority plan for the sustainable development of the area using GIS and remote sensing techniques. The IRS P6 LISS III imagery was used for the preparation of land use/land cover and hydrogeomorphology maps. Geologically most of the watershed is covered by the rocks of Archean age i.e. granite gneiss.
