    The paper briefly reviews the mandates and main activities of some major governmental and non-governmental international organizations concerned with the management of forest genetic resources, and the role that such organizations play in this field. It is noted that national forest genetic programmes will continue to constitute the building blocks of regional and global programmes, but that these can be usefully complemented by harmonization of action at international level.

    A discussion of the concerns of the environmental movement in the Asia-Pacific region with reference to biological diversity, forest loss, indigenous and forest-dependant people and climate change. The environmental perspective of different aspects of forestry development in the region is elucidated. Three possible scenarios for the future are presented depending on the level of achievement of environmental goals.

    Following the ban in logging of natural forests in 1989, Thailand instituted a number of measures to promote private sector involvement in forest plantations. Small farmholders were encouraged to invest in forest plantations, especially by raising long rotation indigenous timber species. While the programme achieved much enthusiasm at the start, only about 40 percent of the planned 1.2 million hectares were planted despite the provision of various incentives.

    This paper introduces a Special Issue of Forest Ecology and Management that includes a collection of analytical results from the 2015 Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA 2015) covering 25 years of forest change (1990–2015). FRA 2015 builds on a series of global assessments that began in 1948 and covers change in forest area and type, volume, biomass and carbon stocking, measures of sustainable forest management, biodiversity and conservation, soil and water protective functions, wood production and a number of socio-economic variables.
