The law is an essential tool for advancing women’s and girls’ rights and equality. A robust and effective legal system based on the rule of law is central to assisting women to become equal partners in decision-making and development. Over the last couple of decades, the international community has invested substantially in programs aimed at strengthening the rule of law in developing countries. Despite this investment, the rule of law continues to mean very little for the vast majority of women and girls.
The results of the Febraury 2013 Land Portal discussion "Using online platforms to increase access to open data and share best practices of monitoring women’s land rights" have been synthesized and incorporated into a new Land Portal paper entitled Connecting people, sharing knowledge, increasing transparency: Using the Land Portal to increase access to open data, share best practices. The paper will be presented at the upcoming Annual World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty 2013, but is available now on the Land Portal:
Gender gaps in South and Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia highlight important issues that need to be considered in designing and implementing equitable development programs.
In a study conducted by the World Agroforestry Centre, researchers found that to better support agroforestry production in Sulawesi, women would benefit from greater access to land rights and ownership and more involvement in land-use management and decision-making.

Please find links below to a recent Human Rights Watch report and video on the human rights impacts of coal mining in Mozambique. Our report shows that almost 60% of Tete province, site of large coal reserves, has been allocated for approved or proposed mining licenses. The report examines how serious shortcomings in government policy and mining companies’ (Vale, Riversdale, Rio Tinto) implementation uprooted largely self-sufficient farming communities and resettled them to arid land far from rivers and markets.

In many parts of the world, women’s rights to land and property are systematically denied. Women have fewer or less secure rights than men, and discriminatory attitudes and practices undermine them. This leaves many women vulnerable, and almost entirely dependent on the men in their lives for basic economic survival.

Most analyses of violence in Darfur ignore the local dimension of the crisis, focusing instead on the region’s economic and political marginalization and climatic variability. However, agricultural change and other changes relating to the land-rights and land-use systems have led to competition and exclusion, and have played a major role in the collective violence that has raged throughout the region. Understanding these questions is essential for the successful resolution of political and policy debates in Darfur.
