    The Project "Afforestation, Forestry Research, Planning and Development in the Three North Region of China" - GCP/CPR/009/BEL - known locally as the "009 Project", is jointly financed by the Governments of Belgium and China, with Technical Assistance by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Its activities are concentrated on the Korqin Sandy Lands in northeastern Inner Mongolia, a sub-region of the Three-North Shelterbelt Program. Its action field covers parts of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and of the Provinces of Jilin and Liaoning.

    This tenth edition of State of the World's Forests elaborates on a fundamental truth: forests, forestry and forest products play a critical role in sustainable development. State of the World's Forests is published every two years. Throughout history, deforestation has accompanied economic development. It was primarily in response to deforestation that the concept of sustainable development originated and evolved within forest science.

    This paper was prepared within the “Cooperatives and their alternatives” component of the Agrarian Structures Initiative (ASI) which a regional program of FAO in Europe and Central Asia. The purpose of this paper is to introduce Central Asian policy makers to the Western paradigm of service cooperative and to explore the constraints – both physical and ideological – to faster development and acceptance of cooperatives. We also discuss the need for a complete reorientation of the government’s approach to cooperative development.

    This book brings together information on the contrasting characteristics, condition, present use and problems of the world's main natural grasslands. Since grassland is commercialized through the grazing animal, particular attention is paid to the livestock production systems associated with each main type. Grazing resources are more than simply edible herbage: many other factors have to be taken into account, notably water in all areas, and shelter in winter-cold climates.
