This Second National Environment Action Plan is a nation-wide sectoral document that provides a framework to guide the efforts in ensuring that the Maldives continues to develop in a sustainable manner. This Act concerns the development and management of geothermal resources for purposes of obtaining geothermal energy. It establishes the Geothermal Resources Advisory Committee. “Geothermal energy” means the energy derived or derivable from and produced within the earth by natural heat phenomena, and includes geothermal water. The Geothermal Resources Advisory Committee shall advise the Minister on development of geothermal energy.

These Regulations are enacted in accordance with the Hot Spring Act.The Regulations provide for land-use zoning and land-use change procedures within hot spring areas. A change of land use within the boundaries of a hot spring area shall be subject to the procedures for change of zoning and land use as stipulated in the Regional Planning Law, the Urban Planning Law, the National Parks Law, and other applicable laws and regulations.
