This workshop took place from 27 to 29 March 2006. The discussions were informed by an issues/discussion paper. The meeting brought together representatives from African governments, regional economic communities, and civil society including farmers’ organizations, African private sector, centres of excellence and development partners.

Earlier (1950s - early 1970s) development planning in African countries was essentially perceived and conceived as macro-economic planning. This perception placed overriding emphasis on the projection and maximization of national economic aggregates such as the GDP, the GNP per capita income, level of employment, stability of price levels etc. as sole measures of economic development performance.
The purpose of this review is to discuss major measures for improving agricultural marketing extension in North Africa. In view of the special conditions of each individual country in the sub-region, the recommended measures are by necessity of general nature and are meant as general guidelines for discussions, The review is divided into four parts. The first part is introductory, giving a brief review of the economic and agricultural situation. The second part is an over view of the agriculture marketing and extension situation.

The attached paper summarizing the main findings and recommendations of the meeting was prepared as a working document for the Third FAO Regional Conference for Africa, held at Addis Ababa from 3 to 15 September 1964.
This paper focused on the policies and programmes relating to human settlements, aspects of urban land policies and of policies for rational urban promotion and the elimination of uncontrolled settlements and slums.
Africa is a considerable net exporter of agricultural products and in 1963 the volume of its gross imports amounted only .to about a quarter of its gross exports. Since 1957 the continent's net exports have been subjected to a constant and fairly rapid increase. In 1963 the rise in net was smaller than in earlier years as gross exports increased only a little However, contrary to the past trend, the growth rate of net exports in 1963 was much higher than that of gross exports because of the reduction in agricultural imports.
