This study investigates the alleged relationship between climate change and conflicts, using the Inland Delta of the Niger River in Mali as a case study, where this region is an African hotspot area in terms of land use conflicts.

Why this study?
Recent years have witnessed an increase in violent conflicts involving pastoralists in parts of West Africa and the Sahel. They often take the form of clashes between herders and farmers, impacting human, national and regional security.
Given its mandate and role in conflict prevention, the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, in collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States, initiated this study in 2017 to examine the causes and identify concrete solutions to conflicts related to pastoralism. -

Land adjudication constitute a series of sequential steps that if followed carefully and correctly, can lead to a sufficient determination of the varied interests in land including whether, and where they overlap, complement, conflict or compete with each other. This is a preliminary study aiming to find out how the adjudication process as it is conducted in the context of a fit-for-purpose land administration (FFPLA). A framework of components for adjudication in the FFPLA context is first developed.

Desde el asesinato de Berta Cáceres en 2016 hasta el 2021, al menos 21 defensoras de tierra y territorio han sido asesinadas en Mesoamérica. Otras 45 defensoras sufrieron intentos de asesinato. Entre 2016 y 2019, registramos un total de 7141 agresiones, 1 de cada 4 de estas fueron dirigidas a defensoras de tierra y territorio. Casi la mitad de las agresiones ocurrieron en Honduras. La mitad de las agresiones entre 2019 y 2020 fueron realizadas por agentes estatales; las empresas realizaron 3 de cada 10.
