This report is based on the Land and Livestock Holdings Survey (LHS) conducted in the 70th round of NSS during January 2013 to December 2013. The survey was conducted only in the rural areas of the country. The survey covered 4529 FSUs. Some features described in this report are:
The study conducted in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh aims to evaluate the effects of creation of assets on lands of Small and Marginal Farmers, Scheduled Cast /Scheduled Tribe and Indira Awas Yojana Beneficiaries.
Dalit stakes in environment are high due to their dependence on natural resources for livelihoods. Though climatic uncertainties have implications on many sectors, rural livelihoods are most affected by changes in climatic patterns. Dalits, who are highly dependent on earnings from agricultural labour and, livestock rearing dependent on forests and other common lands have fewer resources and options to combat the damages to the resourcebase because of climate change.
A major gap in understanding the situation in India with respect to land and its control is the takeover of common lands, which rarely figures in discourses on land. The Society for Promotion of Wastelands Development (SPWD, New Delhi) and RRI commissioned case studies on the takeover of common lands in India in an attempt to fill this gap. This paper is a compilation of those studies. Based on these case studies, an international conference was held in December 2012 to reflect the current situation and discuss possible policy actions.
RCDC assigned a task of compiling a report on the functioning of PESA in the state of Odisha based both on secondary analysis and primary survey at field level, to a local consultant organization National Institute for Development Innovation(NIDI) in late 2010. Agreeing with our observation that the report submitted under the same required further improvements and enrichments the consultant made fresh efforts in 2011 and submitted an improved version of the same without any extra charges.
Contract farming is one of the illustrated examples of the impact of globalization and liberalized economic policy in the agriculture sector. While the farm sector is facing an identity crisis amidst growing dominance of the industrial sector, contract farming helped to create a new hope in this scenario. It established a link between the farm sector and the corporate sector too. This way it created new prospects for the agricultural sector, and added to the dignity of the farmer. However, the actual practice was often not so farmer-friendly.
RCDC pursued a bio-resource governance programme during the period of 2009-11 in four tribal districts of Odisha with an objective of developing model GPs on bioresource governance. Land use being a major factor in natural resource governance, changes in land utilization, particularly forest land diversion, has been a matter of concern for these areas. In this backdrop, RCDC intended for an in-depth analysis of the dynamics of the changes in land utilization pattern in the state with focus on forest land diversion.
Although a high rate of urbanization and a high incidence of rural poverty are two distinct features of many developing countries, there is little knowledge of the effects of the former on the latter. Using a large sample of Indian districts from the 1983–1999 period, we find that urbanization has a substantial and systematic poverty-reducing effect in the surrounding rural areas.
The statistical profile is a comprehensive statistical profile of Scheduled Tribes (otherwise called indigenous people), produced and published by Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. The profile presents information relating to some key characteristics pertaining to STs like trend analysis of demographic profile, education, health, and employment status along with their proportions having basic amenities like, drinking water, electricity, and bank account etc.
Chiefly an agricultural society, India has a strong linkage between land and social status of an individual. Nearly 70 % of its population dependent on land, either as farmers or farm laborers and it is imperative to address the issues of land ensuring livelihood, dignity and food security to millions of Indians. Land reform was a major policy initiative in the country in 1950s and early 1960s.
