    This book has arisen out of the theoretical knowledge and practical experience gained during the implementation of a FAO project in the Czech Republic: TCP/CEH/2902 “Sustainable Utilization of Agricultural ‘Abandoned’ Land”. The outputs from this project have brought not only improved models for management of the natural resources, but also tested new practical methods of alternative agriculture, combining game-keeping, food-marketing, ecotourism, etc.

    African agrifood systems are being transformed by multinational capital. To date, research on this transformation has focused most intently on the rise of supermarkets and demand for African land. Multinational investment in African grain trading has received less attention. Using a range of qualitative methods and representative household survey data from Zambia, this article seeks to understand the causes and consequences of multinational investment in smallholder grain markets.

    Geographical indication (GI) schemes can play a special role in promoting sustainable rural development, improving farm income and opening new export potential. Natural factors such as soil, climate and plant varieties play a major role in producing a unique product.
