An overview of the forest resources and industries of the Union of Myanmar. The long term objectives of forestry in the country are given along with major impacting issues such as land use and people participation. Future scenarios are presented based on current policies and trends.

El Proyecto Integrado de Seguridad Alimentaria (IFSP) es un programa de colaboración germano-vietnamita, cuya finalidad es mejorar las condiciones de vida mínimas de los habitantes de los distritos de Tuyen Hoa y Minh Hoa de la provincia de Quang Binh en Vietnam Central. Tuyen Hoa y Minh Hoa son distritos montañosos, con un extensión relativamente alta de cobertura de bosque, por lo que la población local no puede cultivar el grano suficiente para satisfacer sus necesidades mínimas de consumo.

An interdisciplinary ‘nexus’ approach is necessary to ensure that food, energy and climate are jointly addressed, trade-offs considered, and appropriate safeguards are put in place. These issues will not be addressed through a single initiative. Because of its importance, scope and complexity, this challenge must be met through participation of a broad constituency of interested parties. This demands a multi partner international effort to implement energy-smart solutions in a non fragmented and cost effective way.

This paper explores a 15-country household data base to evaluate the impact of three key assets (land, education and infrastructure) on rural poverty. Using both a descriptive analysis and a quadratic probit model, with the probability of being poor as a function of these three assets, the paper concludes that household access to education and infrastructure are positively associated with higher incomes, while the impact of land holdings varies across countries. Also, this paper shows the importance of the complementarities among assets in their poverty alleviating potential.

This study uses a livelihoods perspective to facilitate understanding of the role played by seeds and PGRs in rural people’s livelihoods and considers how a livelihood perspective may strengthen understanding of issues of access. A sustainable livelihoods perspective offers a way of thinking about the linkages among vulnerability, poverty and environmental or natural resource management.
