In every region of the world, landscapes are being transformed. Rural people are migrating to urban centres in search of economic and social opportunities while city dwellers are becoming interested in producing their own food and moving outside the centres to be able to appreciate nature. These changes in lifestyles have implications for the food system and nutritional status of populations.

The international community is committed to eliminating poverty. International development targets to that end include a reduction by half in the number of people who are food insecure and a similar reduction in the proportion of people living in extreme poverty by the year 2015. The Forestry Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with the support of the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID), held an interagency Forum on the Role of Forestry in Poverty Alleviation in September 2001.

The task may be daunting, but so are the numbers of hungry and undernourished people whose fate is dependent on decisive and accelerated action. I am convinced that, with a renewed commitment and determined, concerted effort, the goal of the World Food Summit can be met.
