    Mozambique, Africa

In Mozambique, changes in land access and use are shaping new landscapes, often at the expense of the poor. Despite progressive land legislation, elite groups and vested interests are consolidating land holdings while peasant producers are being dispossessed of their land and access to fertile plots is becoming increasingly difficult. As national and foreign investors seek land for housing, real estate, agriculture, tourism, mining and forestry, what is the state’s role in responding to these increased demands?

    Kenya

Under the new Constitution of Kenya, 2010, the County Government is now vested with the authority to ensure that land owned by county residents is used for the purposes it has been intended for by the Director of Physical Planning established under the Physical Planning Act. This means that if you intend to buy agricultural land and convert it into commercial use, you will be forced to seek approval for this kind of change of user of the land.

    Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe confirmed that alluvial diamonds had been discovered in the Marange area in Mutare District in 2006. However, as in many otherAfrican countries, the promise diamond mining holds for economic growth has been eroded by a lack of transparency and accountability. The country’s diamond sector has been bedevilled by smuggling, opaque licensing, human rights abuses, self-enrichment by executives and public officials, and extremely limited accrual of diamond revenues to the fiscus, among others.
