    Afghanistan joined FAO in 1949 and has a long history of technical cooperation with the Organization. Today the<p></p>Afghanistan country programme is one of FAO’s largest in the Asia and Pacific region. Ongoing projects in the country cover<p></p>household food and livelihood security, animal health and transboundary diseases; small-scale integrated dairy schemes,<p></p>value chain development; soil mapping and national agriculture ecological zoning; and development of research policy and<p></p>strategy.

    Laos

    The Lao Land and Forest Allocation Policy (LFAP) was intended to provide clearer property rights for swidden farmers living in mountainous areas. These lands are legally defined as “State” forests but are under various forms of customary tenure. The policy involves demarcating village territorial boundaries, ecological zoning of lands within village territories, and finally allocating a limited number of individual land parcels to specific households for farming.

    Angola and FAO have engaged in close cooperation since the country joined the Organization in<p></p>1977. Owing to the 27-year civil war, early FAO interventions were focused on emergency assistance,<p></p>including resettling of vulnerable rural households and the provision of agricultural inputs for the<p></p>rapid resumption of food production.

    The twin-island state of Antigua and Barbuda has been a member of FAO since 1983. Cooperation over the past 30 years has produced a strong partnership, both at the country and Caribbean level. FAO interventions have ranged from food security and agriculture policy formulation to direct support in a variety of areas, including food production, crop protection and fisheries development as well as natural disaster response and preparedness.

    Belarus and FAO have been implementing a number of development programmes to encourage agro-industry growth, rural development and trade facilitation since 2005, when the country became a member of FAO. In providing assistance, FAO is and will be focusing on increasing efforts to prevent the African Swine Fever, to help eliminate obsolete pesticides, to harmonize the standards of quality for agricultural products with the European standards, to develop climate change projects and to provide training to the Belarusian agricultural specialists.

    Bhutan joined FAO in 1981 and a country office was established in the mid-1980s. Since then, FAO has implemented close to 100 projects. Cooperation began with on-the-ground agricultural development activities based on ad hoc government requests, shifting more recently to policy and legislative support; information exchange and capacity building; partnership building and regional collaboration; and emergency and rehabilitation assistance. Current cooperation with this small, landlocked country al so features natural resource management and rural development.

    Canada has long been an active and generous resource partner, working closely with FAO in support of a wide range of shared food security and agricultural development goals. Mutual priority themes include child and maternal nutrition, land tenure and resilience building – with much of Canada’s recent cooperation with FAO having been in response to emergencies where host governments have prioritized FAO’s recovery projects. Canadian expertise and staffing resources are also an important asset for FAO.

    Comoros

    Since Comoros joined the Organization in 1977, a variety of interventions have been delivered across the food and agriculture sector. Assistance has included capacity building, institutional strengthening and policy formulation as well as direct support to development projects. Current cooperation efforts are geared towards increasing agricultural production, particularly food products, and protecting natural resources – with an emphasis on agroforestry development. Strengthening agricultural data collection and information systems is another priority area.
