The Project "Afforestation, Forestry Research, Planning and Development in the Three North Region of China" - GCP/CPR/009/BEL - known locally as the "009 Project", is jointly financed by the Governments of Belgium and China, with Technical Assistance by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Its activities are concentrated on the Korqin Sandy Lands in northeastern Inner Mongolia, a sub-region of the Three-North Shelterbelt Program. Its action field covers parts of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and of the Provinces of Jilin and Liaoning.

This publication deals with the underlying concepts relating to drainage water management. It first discusses the adequate identification and definition of the problem for the selection and application of a combination of management options. It then presents technical considerations and details on the four groups of drainage management options. The second part of the publication contains the summaries of the case studies from the United States of America, Central Asia, Egypt, India and Pakistan.

Han transcurrido 17 años desde la iniciación, en 1985, del conjunto de procesos nacionales de programación y ejecución de actividades forestales que contribuyen al desarrollo sostenible, conocido en un comienzo como los Planes de Acción Forestal Tropical (PAFT), y posteriormente, en 1992, con la revisión del marco inicial como los Programas de Acción Forestal Nacional (PAFN). Sucesivos esfuerzos para fortalecer esos procesos, superando sus iniciales deficiencias, dieron lugar a la estructuración de los programas forestales nacionales.
Le Département des forêts de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO), avec le concours du Ministère du développement international du Royaume-Uni (DFID), a tenu, en septembre 2001, un Forum interinstitutions sur le rôle de la foresterie dans la réduction de la pauvreté. This case study is one of a series of publications produced by the Forest Harvesting, Trade and Marketing Branch of FAO in an effort to promote environmentally sound forest harvesting and engineering practices. The purpose of these studies is to highlight both the promise of environmentally sound forest harvesting technologies as a component of sustainable forest management, and the constraints that must be overcome in order to assure widespread adoption of those technologies.
