IIED is a policy and action research organisation working to promote sustainable development. Based in the United Kingdom, IIED collaborates closely with partner organisations working with some of the world’s most vulnerable people in over 60 countries. The longstanding Legal Tools for Citizen Empowerment initiative works to strengthen local rights and voices where land and natural resource governance meets transnational economic relations – particularly in the context of agriculture and extractive industry investments. IIED’s work supports local-to-global efforts through:

Carrying out high-impact analysis on global trends in land-based investments and most effective strategies for empowerment and accountability.

Developing approaches to strengthen capacity and support informed policy making on securing land rights, aligning investment frameworks with sustainable development, and enabling people to exercise their rights.

Sharing lessons from innovations on how to help people make informed choices, claim their rights and advance their development priorities.
In the LEGEND programme, IIED served in the Core Land Support Team (CLST) to:

Contribute to the programme’s strategic thinking, particularly on responsible investment.

Generate new insights on issues such as addressing “legacy” land issues, advancing legal empowerment, and improving the practices of development finance institutions
