Even with extensive earlier research examining the distribution of tree canopy in cities, we know little about human perceptions of urban forestry and related ecosystem services.

Large urban trees are excellent filters for urban pollutants and fine particulates. One tree can absorb up to 150 kg of CO2 per year, sequester carbon and consequently mitigate climate change. Trees provide habitat, food and protection to plants and animals, increasing urban biodiversity. Planting trees today is essential for future generations!

Recognizing the importance of the services provided by forests and trees to urban dwellers, the Collaborative Partnership on Forests proposed that the theme for the 2018 International Day of Forests would be “Forests and Sustainable Cities”.
