Rwanda has a bitterly conflicted history with social divisions amplified by its colonial past. As the most densely populated country in Africa, there is enormous pressure on land and natural resources. Rwanda has experienced recurrent episodes of mass violence, civil war and genocide which also displaced millions of people into neighbouring countries in the Great Lakes region.
