The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information. We help developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. Since our founding in 1945, we have focused special attention on developing rural areas, home to 70 percent of the world's poor and hungry people.

This note has been prepared for the plenary session of the European Forest Week on “Forests and Water” taking place on Thursday, 23 October 2008 1 . يستكشف تقرير حالة الأغذية والزراعة 2008 انعكاسات النمو السريع الذي حدث مؤخراً في إنتاج الوقود الحيوي القائم على السلع الأساسية الزراعية. والازدهار الذي شهده إنتاج الوقود الحيوي السائل تقف وراءه، إلى حد كبير، سياسات في البلدان المتقدمة تستند إلى مساهمات ذلك الوقود الإيجابية المتوقعة في التخفيف من تغير المناخ وتحقيق أمن الطاقة والتنمية الزراعية. والطلب المتزايد على السلع الأساسية الزراعية، من أجل إنتاج الوقود الحيوي، تترتب عليه عواقب كبيرة بالنسبة للأسواق الزراعية، ويتصاعد القلق بشأن تأثيره السلبي على الأمن الغذائي لملايين البشر في مختلف أنحاء العالم.
