Land and natural resource alienation in Cambodia

Policy Papers & Briefs
декабря, 2006
Cambodia

Land is the repository of memory and keeps traces of the past in the absence of a strong written tradition. It is perceived as an open book from which anyone can read and learn about local history: place names, old roads, legends and stories attached to places. For local people, bulldozing the landscape is seen as erasing their history, and disturbing social organisations and traditions.[1] In Cambodia--as in many other countries--land is an extremely important economic resource and asset. Land is livelihood.

Managing the Florida Everglades: Changing values, changing policies

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2006

The Florida Everglades is a ecologically rich land and water environment that has gone through three phases. In the first phase, a small indigenous population drew its low-impact livelihood from the Everglades. During the second phase, the Everglades was drained, plowed, developed, and seriously damaged, while helping to support a booming South Florida economy. During the third phase, earlier alterations of water flow patterns in a part of the original Everglades are being restored and agricultural impacts are being mitigated.

Australia

Should north Australia's extensive populations of feral animals be eradicated for conservation, or exploited as a rare opportunity for Indigenous enterprise in remote regions? We examine options for a herd of banteng, a cattle species endangered in its native Asian range but abundant in Garig Gunak Barlu National Park, an Aboriginal land managed jointly by traditional owners and a conservation agency in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Land reform, security of tenure and environmental conservation in Nigeria

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2006
Nigeria

This paper is a review of the Land Use Act of 1978 with a view to examining the implications of the Act for security of tenure and environmental conservation. The review indicates that while the inalienation of rights of use and ownership of land under the communal or group ownership tenure system limited access to land and security of tenure, it encouraged the protection and conservation of land resources and the physical environment.

Conflict and displacement in Burma/Myanmar

Reports & Research
декабря, 2006
Myanmar

...This chapter has described aspects of forced migration in Burma that
are under-researched, including the phenomenon of serial displacement,
and has proposed a three-part typology. Many internally displaced
persons and others move repeatedly, sometimes for a combination
of reasons; others have been displaced for some time and have found
at least semi-durable solutions to their plight; many are living mixed
with communities who are not—or have not recently been—displaced.
Forced migrants’ needs can be assessed and appropriate interventions

The paper analyzes a workshop to enhance Katkari claims to land, which the tribal people have inhabited for 45 years. Participants felt confident in the findings of the exercise and with their decision to proceed with a petition to village authorities. They also said that the assessment gave them a better sense of their relative power and legitimacy in relation to the issue. The conditions for making a petition for legal title to the hamlet improved during three months, due to shifts in the assessment of power and interests for a number of stakeholders.
