This adaptation is particularly important to deal with a dynamic process of unpredictable climate variability and permanent human interactions in dryland ecosystems in Africa. It is considered of fundamental importance to ensure the application of innovative techniques and mechanisms to deal with these changes, and that these technologies are strategically integrated into community social structures and resource management value systems.

Vegetable cultivation is a survival strategy for the urban population, especially with the increasing population, urbanization, and high unemployment rate. For decades, men have practiced vegetable cultivation in Tamale's metropolitan city, with women being involved at the last node of the value chain – marketing. Women are known as market queens, and culturally, sell foodstuff in the market, unlike men who can’t do the same. These market queens buy vegetables from farm gates and sell them at wholesale prices to other market women who retail them in the market.

Nevertheless, Colombian tropical cattle systems still feature serious deficiencies in both forage quality and availability. As a result of past and ongoing forage Research and Development (R&D) processes, institutions have released 23 grass and legume cultivars of superior characteristics in terms of forage quality, supply, or adaptation to different soil and climate conditions, while providing numerous environmental benefits.

Natural calamities such as drought, famine, and climate change have collided to create a humanitarian crisis. For the Horn of Africa (HoA), famine is among the factors that have caused the worst historical damages to the individual countries. Man-made calamities such as decentralized agricultural, pastoral activities and forest clearing are also root causes for the damage. Institutional arrangements (IAs) on land tenure systems and agricultural land conversion (ALC) as a part of this problem will be analyzed in this paper.

Pathways for improving rangeland governance under constraining land tenure systems: Application of a participatory Bayesian Belief approach

This paper analyzes the complex relationships of factors influencing rangeland governance in the arid areas. A Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) model was developed in a participatory way to illustrate and assess the weight of a combination of environmental, social and institutional factors enabling the achievement of strengthened rangeland governance at a local level. The Bayesian model was applied in Tataouine situated in south of Tunisia. A complex diagram was built in a participatory way to illustrate the most important interactions between rangeland socioecological system components.

Inventory of novel approaches to seed quality assurance mechanisms for vegetatively propagated crops (VPCs) in seven African countries

This paper provides an inventory of novel approaches to and mechanisms for quality assurance of the seeds of vegetatively produced crops (VPCs). It explores to what extent seven African countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia) are decentralising and integrating VPC seed systems, in terms of regulations governing the sector, methods of seed production, and methods of seed inspection and certification. It consolidates existing data and presents new data on decentralised seed quality assurance (SQA) approaches for VPCs in these seven selected countries.

Protocol for mapping climate-risks and associated adaptation plans under Asian Mega-Deltas Initiative

The Participatory Mapping method was applied by Vietnam’s Department of Crop Production and the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security – Southeast Asia in designing the approach for Climate-risk mapping and adaptation planning – CS-MAP. Local knowledge is very important in identifying affected area, the level of climate risks and adaptation measures taking into account local contexts (natural resources, infrastructure and production activities). In CS-MAP, spatial and temporal factors are used in analysis following a 5-step process.

Advancing climate resilience in agriculture via climate information services in Myanmar

This document is developed to inform key agricultural stakeholders working in Myanmar about the importance of climate information in enhancing the resilience of the agriculture sector to the impact of climate change. The report is divided into three main parts: i) an overview of climate risks and their impact on Myanmar agriculture; ii) an existing climate information service based on main climate services pillars from generation, translation, dissemination, and use; and iii) areas for further investment and support for scaling out the activities in the future.
