icardina Cuthbert vai distribuindo, pelas três mesas que ocupam a sala, travessas com banana frita e arroz para acompanhar o peixe-espada grelhado, que a paróquia de Camarate trouxe. A comida sabe a Angola e ninguém poupa os elogios à cozinheira que também a pôs nas mesas. "Há quanto tempo não víamos esta sala assim?", desabafa, quando finalmente se senta, a dona da única casa de tijolos com eletricidade e água do bairro da Torre, em Camarate, concelho de Loures - junto ao Aeroporto Humberto Delgado. A recém-recuperada sala serviu de casa às 35 pessoas que viviam nas quatro barracas consumidas pelas chamas num incêndio em julho. A maioria das quais foi realojada pela câmara municipal e pelo Instituto da Habitação e da Reabilitação Urbana (IHRU), na Margem Sul do Tejo ou na Apelação.
Flávia Fernandes também perdeu o pouco que tinha no incêndio mas continua sem ter para onde ir. Tem 53 anos e veio de São Tomé e Príncipe para Portugal há 34 anos. Agora, passa os dias perto de Ricardina, ajuda-a nas tarefas diárias e é ali que engana o estômago. À noite abriga-se no chão da barraca de um vizinho - uma construção tosca com tábuas de madeira e remendos de cartão.
Assim (sobre)vivem 44 famílias, cerca de 150 pessoas, nos terrenos ocupados ilegalmente desde a década de 1970. O bairro está dividido em dois, uma parte ocupada por angolanos e outra por ciganos. Mas dos dois lados da estrada de terra batida que separa as duas comunidades as condições são as mesmas.

"Se estiver aqui na barraca só choro", o lamento vem do outro lado, onde estão os ciganos. Maria da Silva Fernandes, de 51 anos, apressa-se a mostrar o sítio onde dorme: um bocado de cartão no chão. A chuva passa pelas frestas das tábuas que improvisam um teto, por isso a paróquia levou para ali tijolos doados para fazer melhoramentos; mas a polícia passa e leva o material de construção. "Dizem que não é permitido por lei ter tijolos aqui", explica José Salvador, o missionário comboniano que dá apoio à paróquia de Camarate há dois anos. "Mas as pessoas podem estar a passar frio e a ficar doentes. Temos dois hospitalizados. Isso já é permitido por lei."
O padre José Salvador passa pelo bairro quase todos os dias.
