It is important to understand and address land and forest tenure – comprehensively – if we are to work towards land and forest restoration that is both socially and ecologically sustainable. Forests are critical to planetary health, and the increasing threats of climate change, biodiversity loss and hunger call for urgent action at all levels.

In Congo-Brazzaville, tree planting projects intended for carbon markets have proliferated over the past four years. This concerns large-scale developments of monocultures initiated by oil companies under the seductive term of carbon neutrality and promises of job creation for communities.

In the framework of Prindex, the Global Land Alliance (GLA) conducts regular global surveys on the perception of land tenure security in more than 100 countries, amplified by in-depth country- and region-specific studies of tenure security.
