Reports & Research

Drawing primarily on a series of sectoral papers presented at a UNDP-EC workshop on poverty and the environment in January 1999 and on supplemental materials, this paper attempts to provide an integrated framework for looking at poverty-environment interactions across a number of resource regimes. Gender and Land Rights Revisited: Exploring New Prospects via the State, Family and Market

Journal Articles & Books
December, 2003
Global

The question of women's land rights has a relatively young history in India. This paper briefly traces that history before examining why gendering the land question remains critical, and what the new possibilities are for enhancing women's land access. Potentially, women can obtain land through the State, the family and the market. The paper explores the prospects and constraints linked to each, arguing that access through the family and the market deserve particular attention, since most arable land in India is privatized.

Access to land, growth and poverty reduction in Malawi

December, 2003
Malawi

Malawi has pursued an agricultural-led development strategy since its independence in 1964. This agricultural-led development strategy was based on the promotion of a dual agricultural system comprising estate (large-scale) production mainly for cash (export) crops and smallholder agricultural production mainly to support the food security needs of the population. In the post-independence era, the objectives of an agricultural strategy were four fold: To raise agricultural productivity and accelerate growth and export performance.

Land policy : securing rights to reduce poverty and promote growth

Land and property are usually the most important physical assets for poor households. In low-income countries served by the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA), land reform is an important part of IDA's overall effort to address poverty and growth constraints, foster better environmental management, and promote gender equality. It also helps societies rebuild after conflicts and natural disasters, such as in Sri Lanka and Aceh, Indonesia.
