The FAO Legal Office provides in-house counsel in accordance with the Basic Texts of the Organization, gives legal advisory services to FAO members, assists in the formulation of treaties on food and agriculture, for which the Director-General acts as Depositary, publishes legal studies and maintains a database (FAOLEX) of national legislation and international agreements concerning food and agriculture (including fisheries, forestry and water).

The Ordinance provides for the protection of the coastline of the British Virgin Islands. No person shall remove any natural barrier against the sea or take away or dig any gravel, sand, stone, etc. except under authority of a permit granted by the Minister. At any rate no person shall remove any land if this results in inroads into land by the sea. The permit may be obtained by an application to be made according to section 5. This Law is enacted with a view to improving the protection, management and development of grasslands and to ensure their rational use; to protect and improve the ecological environment, to modernise animal husbandry; and to enhance the prosperity of the local economies of the national autonomous areas. This Law shall be applicable to all grasslands within the territory of China, including hills and lands covered with grass. The department of farming and animal husbandry under the State Council shall be in charge of national administration of grasslands.
