À l'approche des prochaines négociations internationales sur le climat, les agriculteurs des régions côtières du Bangladesh soulignent l'importance de droits fonciers solides et bien documentés face aux multiples catastrophes liées au changement climatique qui ont eu un impact négatif sur leur vie et leurs moyens de subsistance. Sous l'égide de l'Association pour la réforme agraire et le développement (ALRD) au Bangladesh et de La Coalition asiatique des ONG pour la réforme agraire et le développement rural (ANGOC) avec le soutien de la Fondation Land Portal et du Forum mondial sur la recherche et l'innovation agricoles (GFAR), une campagne d'information et de médias sociaux a été lancée afin d'amplifier leurs voix sur la question. Cette fois-ci, nous avons pris des mesures collectives pour faire en sorte que le discours sur la politique climatique ne néglige pas le rôle crucial que jouent les droits fonciers dans le renforcement de la résilience climatique de l'une des populations les plus vulnérables. The event was organized by a consortium of organizations, including the Land Portal Foundation, the Global Forum on Agricultural Research and Innovation (GFAR), the Asian NGO Coalition (ANGOC) and Young Professionals for Agricultural Development (YPARD).

Earth Observations for Humanitarian Applications

NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing Training Program (ARSET) has opened a new open, online webinar series: Earth Observations for Humanitarian Applications. Refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and other displaced populations are made more vulnerable to climate change impacts due to their socio-political marginalization. This three-part, intermediate training presents concrete strategies for mapping localized climate conditions with risks faced by refugee and IDP communities around the world.

The training will focus on flood risk assessments and specific challenges for assessing flood risk in refugee and IDP camps; gauging long-term heat stress in refugee camps and the challenges with decision making surrounding heat risk; and monitoring drought effects on agricultural landscapes in refugee settings using Earth observations (EO) to explore the correlations between anomalies in crop productivity and weather-based factors

The aim of this event is increasing public understanding of the links between climate change, disasters, and land tenure rights, and bringing land tenure issues in the climate change discourse, listening particularly to the voices of civil society and youth. The discussion is also expected to bring forth some ideas for action both for the new GFAR Collective Action on land tenure and climate change, and for policy makers.

The spread of COVID-19 in South Africa and other countries in the region has again brought to the fore the fact that very dense, under-serviced, mostly informal, settlements are not healthy places to live. They are also places where the spread of a disease is difficult to prevent or manage.

The kind of emergency response that was required to address the imminent spread of COVID-19 highlighted the widespread vulnerability of the poorest, compounded by highly unequal access to services and ongoing unhealthy living conditions.
