Livestock Asia: A strategy and action plan for research for poverty reduction
This strategy and action plan has been co-produced by over 50 organizations and individuals. We hope that it will be of value to all those interested in reducing poverty through livestock research and development in South and South-East Asia and China. In particular we hope that it will
be used by researchers, policymakers, aid specialists and development practitioners to inform the development of their policies, programs and projects.
Livestock-water interactions: The case of Gumara Watershed in the Upper Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia
Although water is a renewable natural resource, it has become insufficient at the global level. Unless the current efficiency level of water use can be increased, the trend of water shortages will become more serious. Among agricultural activities, livestock production is mostly considered an intensive water consuming operation although the knowledge and information related to livestock-water interaction app ears to be limited in scope.
Livestock herds, overgrazing and range degradation in Zimbabwe: How and why do the herds keep growing?
This paper looks at African livestock herds in Zimbabwe over the period 1890-1980. The focus is on the livestock system in the tribal areas where, under communal land use, there has been long-term concern with environmental deterioration Zimbabwe was chosen because it is one of the few African countries for which reasonably accurate historical data are available regarding African (common range) as opposed to Europen (closed range) herd development.
Locating poor livestock keepers at the global level for research and development targeting
Many research and development agencies are committed to halving the number of people living in extreme poverty by 2015. Knowledge of where the poor are, and what characterises them, is patchy at best. Here we describe a global livestock and poverty mapping study designed to assist in targeting research and development activities concerning livestock. Estimates of the numbers of poor livestock keepers by production system and region are presented.

Livestock production prospects for tropical Africa in the year 2000
Discusses the general prospects for demand and supply of meat and dairy products in tropical Africa, w. emphasis on factors influencing supply & demand such as population growth, rising incomes, and traditional production blockages. Analyses supply prospects from existing livestock production systems, and points out some development paths to be followed such as trypanosomiasis eradication and improvement of tradition production and smallholder fattening systems.
Livestock development and climate change in Turkana District, Kenya
The main purpose of the study presented here is to shed some light using simple and aggregated methods on the following question: In view of the expected climate change, is there also a long-term perspective for livestock development in the area, i.e. will the Turkana ecosystem be able to sustain livestock production during the next few decades?
