O presente volume reúne algumas das comunicações apresentadas no painel sobre “Cidadania e Governação” da Conferência Inaugural do Instituto de Estudos Sociais e Económicos (IESE), que teve lugar em Setembro de 2007, em Maputo. Tratando-se de um tema muito amplo e aberto, não existe uma problemática comum aos textos seleccionados.

This volume includes some of the papers presented at the Inaugural Conference of the Institute for Social and Economic Studies (IESE), which took place on 19 September 2007, in Maputo. The articles contained in this volume were selected from the panel on “Southern Africa”. The topics of the Conference, on “Challenges for social and economic research in Mozambique”, and of the panels were broad and dependent on papers submitted.

This thesis examines the extent to which Kenya’s domestic legal framework vindicates indigenous peoples’ land rights. The question of who is an indigenous person in Kenya is, of course, controversial. In order to avoid becoming enmeshed in this debate, this thesis adopts the approach of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which is based on identifying the key concerns faced by marginalised communities who self-identify as indigenous peoples.

It is almost a decade now since the fights between Pastoralists and peasants broke out in Kilosa district Morogoro region in December 2000 claiming tens of people’s lives and causing irreparable losses and damages their properties. While the wounds of that dark record are still fresh in some of the minds of the communities in Kilosa, another very serious fight between the same or rather similar groups occurred this October prompting the media and human rights activists to find some ways to intervene in a bid to find lasting solutions for the problems.

Land is the centre of most conflicts in Northeast India because of its importance in the life of the people of the region, particularly its tribal communities. It is also the resource most under attack, in the tribal areas in particular.

This book contains studies papers conducted by a group of researchers on land alienation in different states of the Northeast in 2005-2006.

The book attempt to understand the processes that result in tribal land alienation and the consequent conflicts in the region.

The year 2007–2008 was the final year of the RECOFTC Program Phase 2004–2008. We are pleased to report that the four-year Program Plan was successfully implemented on time, and we fulfilled all the major remaining commitments, even exceeding targets in some areas. This is largely thanks to the generous financial support from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Since the end of September 2008, SPDC and DKBA troops have begun preparing for what KHRG researchers expect to be a renewed offensive against KNU/KNLA-controlled areas in Pa'an District. These activities match a similar increase in joint SPDC-DKBA operations in Dooplaya District further south where these groups have conducted attacks against villagers and KNU/KNLA targets over the past couple of weeks.

The main aim of this study was to assess, within the context of the Malonda Programme in Niassa Province, the implementation of community consultations and negotiations as well as the delimitation and demarcation of community land. These activities had been carried out within the context of requests from several investors concerning the Right to Use and Exploit Land (Portuguese acronym DUAT, Direito de Uso e Aproveitamento de Terra), in order to create wide commercial forest plantations in Niassa.

"Twenty years after the Burmese junta gunned down pro-democracy protesters, violations of human rights and humanitarian law in eastern Burma are more widespread and systematic than ever. Ten years after the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement were submitted, the international response in eastern Burma remains largely ineffective in dealing with a predatory governing regime.

Forest-based conflict is one of the major global challenges for the international forestry agenda together with poverty, climate change, conservation, and biofuels. In this paper, we will estimate the scope of the problem for people and forests, identify the role of forest rights and tenure as part of the cause of and solution to conflict, and project future challenges.
