Mak digitises land records
Makerere University has digitised more than 10,000 land records to preserve fragile documents and ease resolution of land conflicts in the country.
The hard copies of land records from 1830 to 1995 were digitised by four researchers, Ms Rhoda Nalubega, Ms Racheal Nabbosa, Ms Monica Naluwooza, and Ms Sara Maka, who are staff of Makerere University Library.
Residents face eviction as investor eyes Jinja bridge lands
Several families along river Nile in Jinja are on the brink of losing ownership of their land as preparations for redevelopment of the area take centerstage. The residents however claim the investor, Heritage Site Uganda, has no authority over their land. Buikwe Resident District Commissioner, Jane Francis Kagayi has since asked the investor to liaise with the physical planner's office to establish facts about the land in order to avoid future land wrangles.
Karuma power dam launch delayed again
The launch of the 600 MW Karuma Hydropower Dam has been delayed again.
The Uganda Electricity Generation Company (UEGCL) has announced they will now commission the hydro-electric power dam in June next year.
The dam, which was built by Sino-hydro Corporation, and whose commissioning has been extended more than twice, is planned for launch on June 22, 2022.

At the time, Nkozi did not have the status and population it does now. In 2003, a young Vincent Agaba acquired the land.
“A quarter of an acre at Shs3m,” he says. Agaba was neither employed nor earning from any other source. It was from his pocket money that he saved money to acquire the sizeable land.
Govt reopens talks over Shs70b irrigation project
The government has embarked on fresh negotiations with land owners in Amuru District to secure land for the establishment of a Shs70 billion irrigation scheme.
On Monday, Ms Brenda Akao, the spokesperson of the Water and Environment ministry, said their officials are in Amuru trying to secure land for constructing the facility meant to boost farming in the district.
Reality of land leases
Whenever the word ‘lease’ is mentioned, three things must come to mind; periodic holding, terms and conditions, and reversionary interests. These features are indispensable to this tenure system because by definition, it is the form of land holding that affords exclusive ownership to be granted by an owner of land, whom we call “the lessor” or “landlord” to another person, called “the lessee” or “tenant” for a period of time, after which such land “reverts” to the lessor. Leases accommodate no perpetuity, however long the period in the lease may be.
Why land conflicts are on the rise
Land is the most important asset in most parts of the world that people can own, including Uganda. In Buganda, land is the way of life as the kingdom’s cultural aspirations are based on land, hence titles like Ssaabataka for a prince who is going to become the Kabaka. Clan heads and elders in Buganda are known as Abataka. However, this scenario isn’t only prevalent in Buganda. Land is a major asset across the country. It is the biggest means of production since our economy is agricultural-based.
Uganda Railways moves to evict 3,000 mechanics
The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) has given about 3,000 mechanics in Jinja City a six-month ultimatum to vacate land on which they are operating to pave way for revamping of the railway.
This is contained in a letter from URC to the mechanics under their association, Jinja City Mechanics and Artisan Association Cooperative Saving and Credit Society Ltd.
33 jailed in crackdown on forest encroachers
Two people have been sentenced to six months in prison for encroaching on Mount Kei Central Forest Reserve on the border between South Sudan, Koboko and Yumbe districts.
Thirty-one others were charged with carrying out prohibited activities in the forest and remanded until June 24.
Strengthen land laws to end conflict
The Government in 2017 put in place Guidelines for Compensation Assessment under Land Acquisition Act.
These proposals are for reform of laws relating to land acquisition by the Government, and they include the amendment to the Land Acquisition Act (Cap 226) in order to bring it into conformity with Article 26 of the Constitution of Uganda. This has remained a big concern among the citizens who lack clarity and specificity on how to deal with land acquisition issues.
