Project Description

Land governance is at the center of development challenges in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. Governments are revising land policies and practices in order to face these challenges. The project aims to (i) assist the emergence of more favorable policies and practices for securing the rights and access of family farmers to land and natural resources; and (ii) to strengthen the effectiveness of concerned stakeholders through learning, alliance building and regional cooperation.

This webinar shed light on two groundbreaking reports concerning gender and land governance in the Mekong region. The reports, "Outlook on Gender and Land in the Mekong Region" and "Towards Gender-Equitable Land Policy and Law Making in the Mekong Region," were produced in Phase II of the Mekong Region Land Governance (MRLG) program. This is the first webinar in the series ‘State of Land in the Mekong region.’ This series highlights the evolving environment of land governance in this dynamic region.

During this webinar panelists discussed the relationship between national gender equality institutions and their impact on women's land rights in the Mekong countries. Additionally, panelists identified the major barriers at the national and local levels that perpetuate gender biases and hinder meaningful participation of women in land-related decisions and land policy reform. The webinar showcased how MRLG is addressing these challenges through gender and land governance trainings, participatory feminist action research and supporting an expert community of practice on gender and land governance in the Mekong region.

This webinar aimed to initiate a critical dialogue on the common challenges faced by women in the Mekong region regarding land governance. Through presentations and discussion with the audience, it explored how access to information and transparent land governance can empower women, ensuring their voices are not just heard but are also influential in policy-making. The webinar looked to share strategies for moving beyond representation to ensuring women's inputs are substantial and impactful in land governance.

The webinar will took place in English, Khmer, Lao,  and Vietnamese.
