The successful reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation requires forest governance to be efficient, effective and equitable.
To implement the ambitious REDD+ actions required to halve deforestation and forest degradation, developing countries need to adopt innovative and ambitious financing approaches.
Given its ability to innovate, rapidly adapt to changing conditions and leverage capital for new market opportunities, the private sector can play a key role in helping countries meet the Sustainable Development Goals and their climate commitments, such as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and REDD+.
This study reviewed the status of natural resources and the driving forces for change, as well as past and ongoing approaches in natural resource management at the watershed scale in Ethiopia. First, we reviewed established environmental policy tools and the legal and policy framework, and determined whether innovative financing mechanisms are working in other areas with a similar context.
The National Forestry Authority has monitored Ugandas land cover, including forested areas, periodically since 1990. The land cover classification is comprised of 13 classes as shown in the table below. The first five classes in the table refer to the different types of forests in Uganda. The largest forest type is woodland.
Report shows that Dutch-based banks continue to finance deforestation and land grabbing in Liberia. Thousands have lost their homes, local communities have been intimidated or imprisoned, and large swathes of forest have been cleared or burnt down.
