The purpose of this paper is to document the different steps followed to construct the Tunisian Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for the year 2012. More precisely, it describes the estimation methods and the nature of data used in the development of the SAM, which has a specific focus on the agriculture and food sectors.

Mapping Tropical Forest Biomass by Combining ALOS-2, Landsat 8, and Field Plots Data

LandLibrary Resource
Peer-reviewed publication
Décembre, 2016
Viet Nam

This research was carried out in a dense tropical forest region with the objective of improving the biomass estimates by a combination of ALOS-2 SAR, Landsat 8 optical, and field plots data. Using forest inventory based biomass data, the performance of different parameters from the two sensors was evaluated.

Drivers of Households’ Land-Use Decisions: A Critical Review of Micro-Level Studies in Tropical Regions

LandLibrary Resource
Peer-reviewed publication
Décembre, 2016

This paper reviews 91 recent empirical and theoretical studies that analyzed land-use change at the farm-household level. The review builds on a conceptual framework of land-use change drivers and conducts a meta-analysis. Results show that the conversion of forests into cultivated land or grassland, mainly used for agriculture or ranching, are most frequently analyzed.

Large-Scale Mapping of Tree-Community Composition as a Surrogate of Forest Degradation in Bornean Tropical Rain Forests

LandLibrary Resource
Peer-reviewed publication
Décembre, 2016

Assessment of the progress of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets set by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the safeguarding of ecosystems from the perverse negative impacts caused by Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Plus (REDD+) requires the development of spatiotemporally robust and sensitive indicators of biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Integration of ALOS PALSAR and Landsat Data for Land Cover and Forest Mapping in Northern Tanzania

LandLibrary Resource
Peer-reviewed publication
Décembre, 2016

Land cover and forest mapping supports decision makers in the course of making informed decisions for implementation of sustainable conservation and management plans of the forest resources and environmental monitoring. This research examines the value of integrating of ALOS PALSAR and Landsat data for improved forest and land cover mapping in Northern Tanzania.

Attributing changes in land cover using independent disturbance datasets: a case study of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Detailed observations of natural and anthropogenic disturbance events that impact forest structure and the distribution of carbon are essential to estimate changes in terrestrial carbon pools and the associated emissions and removals of greenhouse gasses.

Conservation strategies for Araucaria Forests in Southern Brazil: assessing current and alternative approaches

LandLibrary Resource
Journal Articles & Books
Décembre, 2016

Efforts to protect the remaining Araucaria Forest fragments in Southern Brazil have focused on large forests dominated by the threatened species Araucaria angustifolia. However, such an approach can miss significant biodiversity by ignoring smaller forest fragments scattered throughout the landscape, many of which exist on small farms.

Are Market-Based Conservation Schemes Gender-Blind? A Qualitative Study of Three Cases From Kenya

LandLibrary Resource
Journal Articles & Books
Décembre, 2016
Kenya

Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) and Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) are considered effective market-based conservation approaches. Surprisingly, limited evidence is conceptualized from a gendered perspective despite widespread knowledge of men's and women's roles as resource users.

Analysis of temporal change in delivery of ecosystem services over 20 years at long term monitoring sites of the UK Environmental Change Network

LandLibrary Resource
Journal Articles & Books
Décembre, 2016

The drivers and pressures experienced by farmland, forestry and upland sites in the UK Environmental Change Network (ECN) over the last 20 years are reported through the lens of recognised approaches to the assessment of ecosystem service delivery.

Of niche differentiation, dispersal ability and historical legacies: what drives woody community assembly in recent Mediterranean forests?

LandLibrary Resource
Journal Articles & Books
Décembre, 2016

Community assembly rules have been extensively studied, but its association with regional environmental variation and land use history remains largely unexplored. Land use history might be especially important in Mediterranean forests, considering their historical deforestation and recent afforestation.

Modeling canopy conductance under contrasting seasonal conditions for a tropical savanna ecosystem of south central Mato Grosso, Brazil

Brésil

Temporal variations in land-atmosphere water vapor exchange are more pronounced in seasonal environments, especially grass-dominated savannas (known as campo sujo Cerrado) of the southern and eastern Amazon Basin.
