AUDA-NEPAD Gender Climate Change and Agriculture Support Program Training Of Trainers

Décembre, 2021
Global

Agriculture's contribution to the economy and employment is declining at varying rates, posing various socioeconomic issues. Meeting growing agricultural needs with current farming techniques is expected to lead to over-extraction from natural resources, accelerate greenhouse gas emissions, and low yields. In addition, intensive and unsustainable agriculture will lead to environmental degradation such as loss of biodiversity, deforestation, and land degradation, among other things.

Which food outlets are important for nutrient-dense-porridge-flour access by the base-of-the-pyramid consumers? Evidence from the Informal Kenyan settlements

Décembre, 2021
Global

Many Kenyan base-of-the-pyramid (BoP) consumers—defined as the poorest two-thirds of the economic human pyramid—remain food insecure, despite the availability of nutrient-dense foods in the market. This study reveals how effective marketing strategies can strengthen food security among BoP consumers through increased access to nutritious foods such as nutrient-dense porridge flour. Nutrient-dense porridge flour refers to a multi-composite porridge flour composed of diverse nutritious ingredients that are necessary to achieve a healthy diet.

Genomic prediction of the performance of hybrids and the combining abilities for line by tester trials in maize

Décembre, 2021
El Salvador

The two most important activities in maize breeding are the development of inbred lines with high values of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA), and the identification of hybrids with high yield potentials. Genomic selection (GS) is a promising genomic tool to perform selection on the untested breeding material based on the genomic estimated breeding values estimated from the genomic prediction (GP).

Revisiting yield gaps and the scope for sustainable intensification for irrigated lowland rice in Southeast Asia

Décembre, 2021
Global

Recent studies on yield gap analysis for rice in Southeast Asia revealed different levels of intensification across the main ‘rice bowls’ in the region. Identifying the key crop management and biophysical drivers of rice yield gaps across different ‘rice bowls’ provides opportunities for comparative analyses, which are crucial to better understand the scope to narrow yield gaps and increase resource-use efficiencies across the region.

Soil carbon storage potential of acid soils of Colombia's Eastern High Plains

Décembre, 2021
Colombia

Improving soil organic carbon (SOC) storage enhances soil quality and mitigates climate change. Agricultural and livestock specialists increasingly view tropical grasslands as a potential target for storing more soil carbon while boosting productivity. Earlier research in the 1990s showed the promise of improving SOC storage in the Eastern High Plains of Colombia. But these studies were limited to two experimental stations, without focusing on conditions on farms or under variable management.

Determinants for deployment of climate-smart integrated pest management practices: a meta-analysis approach

Décembre, 2021
Global

Following the development and dissemination of new climate-smart agricultural technologies to farmers globally, there has been an increase in the number of socio-economic studies on the adoption of climate-smart integrated pests’ management (CS-IPM) technologies over the years. In this study, we review empirical evidence on adoption determinants of CS-IPM technologies and identify possible science-policy interfaces. Generally, our review shows that socioeconomic and institutional factors are influential in shaping CS-IPM adoption decisions of farmers.
