Le Royaume hachémite de Jordanie est reconnu comme l'un des pays les plus pauvres en eau au monde. Seules 4 % de ses terres sont considérées comme arables et le pays est confronté à des défis majeurs dans le secteur de l'agriculture. La pénurie d'eau et le manque de ressources naturelles restreignent considérablement la production agricole et menacent les acquis sociaux et économiques. Le pays est sujet à des sécheresses périodiques et dépend fortement des eaux souterraines pour répondre à la demande de la population. Au cours de la dernière décennie, la Jordanie a connu la plus forte croissance démographique du Moyen-Orient et accueille environ 1,4 million de réfugiés syriens.
