Sri Lanka

L'île de Sri Lanka a une superficie de 65 610 km², et est densément peuplée avec 21,8 millions de personnes.Sa situation, à 50 km au sud de l'Inde, a conféré à l'île une importance stratégique à mesure que s'ouvraient les routes maritimes commerciales dans le monde. Cela a attiré l'attention d'un certain nombre de puissances européennes. Le Sri Lanka a été colonisé par les Portugais au XVIe siècle, puis par les Néerlandais aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, et enfin par les Britanniques jusqu'à l'indépendance en 1948. Il existe un système juridique pluraliste, où un droit romain-néerlandais résiduel fonctionne à côté d'un parlement de style britannique et d'une présidence de style français, mais avec peu de garanties contre les abus de pouvoir.D'un point de vue économique, le Sri Lanka a le statut de pays à revenu moyen inférieur selon les critères de la Banque mondiale. Cependant, cela masque un niveau élevé d'inégalité des revenus, où 40 % de la population vivent avec moins de 225 roupies sri-lankaises (1,2 USD) par jour, et 70 % de la main-d'œuvre se trouvent dans le secteur informel, sans accès à la protection sociale.
