This document is intended to promote a disciplined approach to integrated closure planning and increase the uniformity of good practice across the sector. The concepts apply equally to both large and small mining companies.

The trade in coloured gemstones stretches around the world, linking source countries on almost every continent to international trade hubs, mainly in Asia, and on to retail markets. Mozambique is one such source, sitting atop significant gemstone deposits, including precious and semi-precious stones.

This paper provides an overview of the supply chains and flows that run from the mines of northern Mozambique and Malawi, to the international trade hubs of Sri Lanka and Thailand. Analysis of the political and economic environment in which mining and trading take place gives a contextual understanding of gemstone flows both within and out of the region as well as the various actors involved.

From 24 to 26 November 2020, the three organisations comprising the Life After Coal campaign, Earthlife Africa (Johannesburg), the Centre for Environmental Rights and ground Work, met virtually to develop a shared Open Agenda on the Just Transition. We used the Open Agenda for a Just Transition - developed at the National Coal Exchange in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, in July 2019 - as a starting point.

After the fall of the Soviet Union and regaining its independence, Armenia has begun a process of systemic transformation. The level and pace of socio-economic development has been influenced by internal situation as well as by country’s geopolitical position and its relations with foreign partners. The purpose of this article is to present general characteristics of foreign direct investment that has been present in Armenia since the 1990s. The author describes several key factors shaping the volume, geographical, proprietary and sectoral structure of the FDI inflows.

Rapidly transitioning the global energy system to renewables is considered necessary to combat climate change. Current estimates suggest that at least 30 energy transition minerals and metals (ETMs) form the material base for the energy transition. The inventory of ETMs indicates a high level of intersectionality with territories less impacted by the historic forces of industrialization.

La République centrafricaine traverse depuis plusieurs décennies des crises socio-politiques et militaires. Celles-ci ont atteint leur apogée en 2013 autour des affrontements entre la Séléka, une rébellion du nord et les Anti-Balaka, un regroupement de milices locales. L’État n’a plus de contrôle sur l’ensemble de son territoire morcelé et tenu par des groupes armés. À partir du cas de l’Ouest centrafricain, cette thèse montre que les conflits armés ont des répercussions profondes sur les rapports des populations aux ressources et aux territoires.

Le présent rapport constitue un diagnostic du secteur minier artisanal dans l’ouest de la République de Centrafrique (RCA) et présente les enjeux de l’exploitation, du commerce et de l’exportation de l’or et des diamants. D’avril à juillet 2019, l’International Peace Information Service (IPIS), en partenariat avec les autorités locales, a réalisé une cartographie des sites miniers artisanaux dans l’ouest de la RCA.  Au total, 322 sites ont été visité dans 7 préfectures.

L’étude proposée par l’UNICEF et le PNUD, en cherchant les caractéristiques actuelles de l’exploitation et de la commercialisation de l’or et du diamant, mais aussi en cherchant les éléments structurants qui feraient entrer cette économie dans un cercle économique et politique vertueux, met donc le doigt sur l’aspect fondamental de la possible sortie de crise de la République centrafricaine.
